Software Engineer

Computer science student at Carleton University building access control, audit trails, and the systems underneath them.

About

Get to know me!

Hi, I'm Nabil, from Ottawa. I'm a computer science student at Carleton University, and I like problems where correctness actually matters — systems where you need to be able to go back and prove what happened and why. That's how I ended up spending most of my time on security and backend work.

Besides coding, some of my other passions are the following:

  • → BGC Ottawa Thunderbolts
  • → Tutoring
  • → Hobbies

BGC Ottawa Thunderbolts

I coach for a barrier-free basketball program I played for growing up. Same gym, other side of the clipboard now.

Hobbies

Hiking around Ottawa and Gatineau, and spending as much time as I can with my friends.

Coding and math · 2025 – present

Tutoring

I also tutor coding and math at the BGC, which mostly comes down to finding the one explanation that makes something click for a specific kid.

Experience

BioCare

Software Engineer

Jan 2026 – present

  • Developed a React Native mobile interface for a smart prosthetic system, implementing responsive UI and device integrations including live telemetry, gesture modes, and preset control, to support real-time patient use and clinical monitoring.
  • Architected Firebase infrastructure with secure authentication, real-time data synchronization, and encrypted database operations, reducing load times by 300ms.
  • Built a RESTful API with 8 endpoints integrating front-end and back-end systems, reducing data retrieval time by 330ms and enabling 3 new feature implementations.

Projects

01Warden

  • Go
  • OAuth 2.0 / OIDC
  • Keycloak
  • Redis
  • Docker

A zero-trust reverse proxy in Go that checks every request before it reaches an internal app: who you are, whether you're allowed on that exact path, and whether your session is still valid. Authentication runs through OIDC with PKCE against Keycloak, path policies default to deny, and every decision is written to an audit log. Sessions live in Redis so they can be revoked server-side immediately instead of waiting out a token expiry.

02Lifts

  • Next.js
  • TypeScript
  • PostgreSQL
  • TimescaleDB
  • Auth0

Peer-to-peer mentoring for hackathon teams. A team posts a technical blocker, another team helps, and the asking team confirms the fix. I built the scoring engine and the points ledger: every award is an append-only row rather than an update to a running balance, duplicate awards are blocked at the database level, reversals record a reason instead of deleting the original, and a verification script reconciles every row against the live leaderboard.

03ASL word recognition

  • Python
  • TensorFlow
  • Keras
  • MediaPipe
  • OpenCV

Real-time American Sign Language recognition from a webcam across a twenty-word vocabulary. MediaPipe tracks twenty-one hand landmarks per frame, those landmarks are centred on the wrist and rescaled so the model learns hand shape and motion rather than where the signer is standing, and a two-layer LSTM classifies over a rolling forty-frame window. It reaches 55-60% accuracy against a 5% random baseline; the ceiling is training data, not architecture.

Teaching and community

BGC Ottawa Thunderbolts

Youth basketball coach

2023 – present

Plan and lead structured practices, adapting instruction across varied experience levels to build team accountability and communication, and mentor youth in leadership, discipline, and resilience.

BGC Ottawa

Coding and math tutor

2025 – present

Teach computational thinking and programming fundamentals in Scratch and Python, including how to use AI tools responsibly rather than as a substitute for understanding. I also help students put together scholarship applications, and several have secured funding to continue their education.

Education

Carleton University

Ottawa, Ontario

Expected May 2028

Bachelor of Computer Science, Cybersecurity Stream

Relevant coursework: Data Structures and Algorithms, Operating Systems, Object-Oriented Programming, Database Management Systems.
